DID YOU SELL THIS? Falmouth June 2010
I met Barry* in 1989 shortly after we started Car Boot Sales and we have been friends since then. Customers come to show Lou and me some of the items they have bought at our sales but they quite often over estimate the value of their purchases. Its nice to daydream that one day you will find a STUNNING BARGAIN. The Car Boot Sale at Falmouth Rugby Club had started at 12.30pm and around 2.00pm Barry* arrived late as usual for his weekly look for something to read. Picking up several books he asked how much they were and paid a pound for five. Before he left he came up and showed me his books saying ‘I believe this is a FIRST EDITION James Bond CASINO ROYALE book and it says 1954 first published by Jonathon Cape’ The book was in pristine condition so I believed Barry when he told me it could be worth a couple of hundred quid and his intention was to read the JAMES BOND novel then sell it on eBay. Delighted that after research the book was probably going to fetch around £400.00 for Barry* so he listed the first edition 007 book with a £300.00 reserve. On the day of the sale the book was stuck on £370.00 as he excitedly looked as the minutes ticked by to the end of the auction! Within the last 10 seconds the book reached a staggering £1826.00 offer from America, so excited was the buyer that he paid a total of £1900.00 by PAYPAL for the book and its safe recorded by Air Mail delivery within 4 days. I know this story to be true but here is the punchline Barry moaned about having to pay the 30p admission charge-the B’stard! Geoff X Name changed to protect the identity* I believe posh Anne sold the book!
